Pew Research Center Local News Habits Survey (2018)

The Local News Habits Survey was conducted by Pew Research Center between October 15 – November 8, 2018, with a nationally representative sample of 34,897 U.S. adults.

The survey explored how Americans consume local news, including reliance on digital vs. traditional sources, trust in local outlets, and the role of local news in building community connection. Data were collected online in English and Spanish, using two panels:

American Trends Panel (ATP): 10,654 respondents

Ipsos KnowledgePanel: 24,243 respondents

Findings were published in the report “For Local News, Americans Embrace Digital but Still Want Strong Community Connection” and an interactive tool that allows CBSA-level exploration.
