According to a Gallup International Snap Poll conducted in March 2020, the fear of being infected by the coronavirus has taken over people across the globe. 3 in 5 (61%) Pakistanis also claim they are afraid that they or a family member may get infected by the virus.
Pakistan ranks 18th globally with regards to highest level of fear of getting infected by Coronavirus. Italy, Indonesia and Korea rank highest with nearly 90% agreeing that they are fearful of getting infected by the virus.
A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the four provinces was asked the following question, “How strongly do you agree or disagree with the following statement: “I am afraid that either I or someone in my family may actually catch the Coronavirus”?” In response to this question, 61% Pakistanis agreed that they are afraid, while 36% said that they are not afraid that they or someone in their family will be infected by the Coronavirus. 3% did not know or did not wish to respond.
Global result:
Globally, 67% agreed that they are afraid of being infected by the Coronavirus while 29% said that they are not afraid that they or someone in their family will be infected by the Coronavirus.
Comparing Pakistan’s figure with the global average figure, Pakistan ranks higher than 9 countries in terms of fear of the Coronavirus and lower than 17 countries.
Regional Results:
In India, 71% people agree that they are afraid that they or someone in their family will be infected by the coronavirus while 25% disagreed and said they are not afraid.
In Afghanistan, 50% said they are fearful of contracting the virus while 49% disagreed.
